Mezzo-soprano, Lori Brown Mirabal's star is rising very quickly. 'She is currently (February - May 2004) appearing at the Opera de Lyon, France and the Grand Theatre, Geneva, Switzerland as Adelaide Bobo in the world premiere of the opera 'Les Negres' by Michael Levinas, based on a story by Jean Genet......during the summer/fall 2003 she created the role of Clara Brown in the world premiere of the opera 'Gabriels' Daughter' at Central City Opera, Colorado." She recently returned form Shenyang, China where she was a featured soloist in an international New Year's Eve Gala sponsored by the United States and China Foundation. She also appeared with Opera Ebony on a PBS "Great Performance" television documentary entitled Aida's Brothers and Sisters which discusses the lives of African Americans in opera. Ms. Mirabal has sung a variety of roles in concert halls, opera houses and theatres throughout the United States and abroad including New York City Opera (as Carmen), L'Opera De Monte Carlo (Lola/Cavalleria Rusticana), Dicapo Opera Theatre (Lucretia/The Rape of Lucretia), State Repertory Opera of New Jersey (Augusta/The Ballad of Baby Doe), Central City Opera (Tituba/The Crucible), Carnegie Hall (Soloist/West Side Story Suite), and Broadway's Gershwin Theatre (Queenie/Showboat). Recently, she covered the role of "Sister Rose" in the World Premiere of Dead Man Walking at the San Francisco Opera. Also, Ms. Mirabal created a series of children's programs called "Opera for the Very Young" which she performs througout New York and New Jersey. A native of Tennessee, she is a graduate of the University of Memphis with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. She also has a Master's Degree in Voice Performance from Manhattan School of Music where she received a scholarship from Oprah Winfrey. Ms. Mirabal's up-coming engagements include, Charlotte in Werther at the Dicapo Opera Theatre in New York, Carmen with Whitewater/Sorg Opera Companies in Ohio and Indiana, and the Brahms, Alto Rhapsody with the Mendelssohn Glee Club in New York. |
